The First Time the Disciples Broke Bread

Reading for April 12th: 1 Kings 1-2
Weekly reading for April 12-18: Acts 1-5

And they devoted themselves... to the breaking of bread
Acts 2:42

Have you ever wondered what it was like the first time the disciples broke bread to remember the Lord's death?

Put yourself in the assembly there in Jerusalem. It's not been more than two months since Jesus was mercilessly executed. To the eyewitnesses of these events the memories are still fresh on their minds.

I can hear the apostles (and especially Peter and John) relate to everyone the agony they witnessed in the Garden, the betrayal and arrest, the trials, and the beatings. I can hear the pain in their voices as they feel the need to confess the way they failed their Lord.

I wonder if anyone spoke to Mary about how she felt as she watched her very heart and soul hanging from that tree. Surely, she would want all to know that Jesus did not forget about her, even as He was in such agony.

I wonder if people went to some of the lesser characters there at the cross: Salome, Mary Magdalene, Simon of Cyrene, Mary the mother of James and Joses. They all had a story. They could relate the few words Jesus said. They could paint a picture of Jesus' meekness, humility, and love.

Though we don't have these people with us (in the flesh) we do have their stories. I find it helpful to read a few verses to recapture again in my mind these events from their eyewitness testimony.

Father, let their testimony speak to us today as we reflect again on Your Son's death.
