Band of Brothers

Title:  Band of Brothers

Reading for January 23:  Exodus 16-18

But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Exodus 17:12

Why do you need friends to help you with temptation?

I know a man who went away on a business trip. He rarely did this in his line of work, but for an entire week he was going to be away from his family in a hotel room all by himself.

This scared him to death.

It scared him because he didn't trust himself with that much freedom (being away from his family). He had failed with sexual temptation in the past and was fearful that he would fail at some point during the week.

What did he do? He first brought the situation to the Lord. But he then called a friend (one of those friends who will stick closer than a brother) whom he knew would faithfully pray for him as well.

This brother called or texted him every day.

Why do we see temptation as an individual struggle? Why do we not see the need to involve others in our fight against sin? Is it pride? Is it fear of being exposed?

Whatever it is, we need to get over it! The reason we need friends to help us with temptation is because we can't do it alone.

"Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." (James 5:16)

Father, thank you for my brothers and sisters who help hold up our hands. Give us the humility to ask for help when we need it.
