O Come, Lord Jesus

Reading for July 1st: Psalm 90-95
Weekly reading for June 28-July 4: 2 Corinthians 10-13

For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:12

Adrienne's favorite picture from our wedding is one of me standing up front looking at her as she walks down the aisle to me. It's a moment I'll never forget.

This is a glimpse of what it will be like when the Lord comes back. We are the bride of Christ, but we are described as being betrothed to him (2 Cor 11:2). The betrothal in ancient marriages was a sort of marriage in which a man would speak of his betrothed as his "wife," even though they were not yet completely joined as husband and wife yet (Mt 1:18-19).

We are the bride of Christ now, enjoying the privileges of marriage to the Son of God (Eph 5:32), and yet we still wait eagerly for the day when we will see our husband face-to-face (1 Jn 3:1-3). The Lord's return is our wedding day; the day when our husband becomes fully joined to us in marriage as his bride.

I can remember counting down the days till my wedding. It seemed at times like it would never come, but with each day the anticipation grew in my heart.

As this world is increasingly given over to sin, we should all yearn for and anticipate his return even more. And we can take comfort in the fact that we are, in fact, one day closer to his return!

O come, Lord Jesus!
