Five Common Lies the Devil Tells Us

Reading for December 22nd: 1 Peter 1-5
Weekly reading for December 20-26: Revelation 12-16

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world--he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
Revelation 12:9

The devil is a liar. He's crafty. He's good at deceiving us. He's been doing it from the beginning. So, we need to be aware of some of the common lies he tries to tell us.

1. Satan's Lie: "There are no consequences to sin."

God's Truth: "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap." Gal 6:7

2. Satan's Lie: "God doesn't love you. He doesn't keep his promises. You can't trust him."

God's Truth: "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God,' for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one... Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." Jas 1:13, 16-17

3. Satan's Lie: "If you go to church on Sunday, you're okay. You don't have to live right the rest of the week."

God's Truth: "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." James 1:22

4. Satan's Lie: "So what if that preacher doesn't preach the whole truth? He is so sincere. You can trust him."

God's Truth: "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness." 2 Cor 11:13-15

5. Satan's Lie: "God just wants you to be happy. If it feels right, go ahead and do it."

God's Truth: "For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience." Eph 5:5-6

Father, help us to mature in our understanding of your will that we might not be so easily deceived by the lies of the devil!
