Why I Believe In Jesus

Reading for December 23rd: 1 John 1-5

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life--the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us--that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you...
1 John 1:1-3

Why do I believe in Jesus? Why do I believe he came to this earth, lived as a man, died on a cross, was buried for three days, and then rose from the dead?

It's because John and other witnesses like him have told me he did. They wrote down what they saw with their eyes, what they looked upon and touched with their hands. And I believe their testimony is true.

Why would I be so naive as to believe such a story? Because there were lots of people who believed. These witnesses didn't merely write down their testimony. They went everywhere publicly proclaiming what they saw. They even stood on Solomon's porch in Jerusalem less than two months after Jesus was raised and announced openly to anyone who would listen that Jesus was alive from the dead.

That's why I believe. The "experts" may tell you Jesus didn't rise from the dead, that he didn't die on the cross, or that he didn't even exist. My question is how do they know? I have an eyewitness who says he saw him, spoke with him, and even touched him after he rose from the dead.

You can believe the experts.

I'll believe the eyewitnesses.

Father, thank you for John's witness to Jesus so that we might have a solid faith in him!
