Life in the Word

Reading for January 6: Genesis 21-23
Weekly reading for January 1-7: Matthew 1-4

“Man shall not live by bread alone,
    but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4

I've been studying Psalm 119 the last few days and a verse kind of jumped off the page at me. It says...

"Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
     and give me life in your ways." Psalm 119:37

This verse explains a lot, doesn't it? Why is our growth stunted? What is the cause of our spiritual sickness? How is that we can't seem to make any progress in our battle with temptation and sin? It's because we're looking at the wrong things! We're focusing at things that do not profit us! We're fixating on things that are worthless!

And note that David says these things are "worthless," not evil or wicked. That is to say the things we're looking at are not necessarily sinful. We aren't consuming things that are poisonous or toxic. Our diet is made up of fluff. We're filling our souls with junk food.

What we need is the Bread of heaven! We need the pure milk of the Word! We need every word that proceeds from the mouth of God! The Word, and only the Word, will give us the nutrition that we need! It is when take our eyes off of worthless things and turn our eyes to the pages of God's Word that we receive that which gives us true life.

Father, fill our hungry souls with the manna that you alone can give!
