Title:  Do All in the Name of the Lord

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus...
Colossians 3:17

What does it mean to do all in the name of Jesus?

To do something in Jesus' name is to do it by his authority. When you go to the doctor to have some procedure done, you will have to sign several documents. When you sign your name you are giving authorization. Your name carries authority with it.

How do we establish authority for what we do (in word or deed)? We must be able to put Jesus' name on it. Before you do something (any word you speak or any action you take), you need to ask the question, "Would Jesus sign off on this?"

How can we know Jesus would approve of our words or our deeds? By pointing to Scripture. The only way we can know if what we're doing would be authorized by Jesus is by putting our finger on a verse.

Father, we only want to do those things that your Son would approve. Give us wisdom to rightly discern his will and a heart to obey his will.
