Putting Yourself Under the Knife

Title:  Putting Yourself Under the Knife

Reading for October 11:  Matthew 23-24
Weekly reading for October 7-13:  Hebrews 1-5

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

Let's say you have this pain that won't go away. The doctor does blood work and various other tests and scans to see what is wrong. Finally, they find a spot inside of you that they think might be the source of the pain, but they don't know what it is. The doctor must then cut you open to find out what that mass inside of you is.

That's the way sin is. It is not difficult to diagnose the symptoms of spiritual sickness (depression, low self-esteem, bitterness, propensity to addiction, etc.), but to get down to the source requires the Word of God. It cuts deep into the soul. It will get into the parts of our heart the devil wants to keep safely hidden from view. It shows who we really are. It reveals the ugly wretchedness of our thoughts and motives.

It takes courage to read the Bible this way. It requires a level of honesty many of us fear. But if you want to give your Bible reading more purpose, then come to the Word of God with an open heart and let God show you where you need to change!

Father, reveal to us those secret parts of our hearts... the parts we try to keep hidden from others... the parts we keep hidden from ourselves! We don't want to sin any more! Correct and discipline us with your Word!
