Title: Where To Turn for Wisdom
Reading for December 12: Colossians 1-4
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:8
If you are looking for the heart of Colossians, I believe it is here in this verse. Paul was intensely concerned about the allure human wisdom and philosophy has on us. He wanted all the saints to understand that Christ is all we need. All true wisdom is found in him.
If I were writing to a bunch of preachers I would say something about the importance of remaining in the Word and making sure our teaching is grounded in and focused on Christ.
But most of you have never preached a sermon, and perhaps never will. I want you to stop and think for a moment about what this verse is saying to you. Though you may never stand in a pulpit, you have one. Wherever you have influence... that is your pulpit. What kind of guidance do you give the people in your circle of influence?
- When your child comes to you with problems, do you impart Christ's wisdom or worldly wisdom?
- When difficult issues arise in your marriage, do you go to Christ for the answers? How do you settle disagreements? What is your default? Is it pragmatism? Is it human philosophy and reasoning? Do you reference Christ?
- What about at work or at school or in the community? When people come to you is it because they know you are that person they can always turn to with an answer from Christ?
Father fill us with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in your knowledge.
