Title: Moses, the Servant of the Lord

Reading for March 4: Deuteronomy 33-34

"So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day."
Deuteronomy 34:5-6

If you could choose what would be written on your tombstone, what would it be?

God gives Moses the highest tribute that could be paid to anyone, when at the end of his life he gives him the epitaph: "the servant of the LORD." This is the second time this title was applied to Moses (Ex 14:31 was the first time). It was used fourteen more times in the book of Joshua. It is used of Moses at the beginning of the book of Joshua, and the same title is used of Joshua himself at the end of his life (Josh 1:1-2; 24:9).

Is there anything higher that we can aspire to than this? Is there any greater position in the kingdom? The position of servant is as high as you can go. There is nothing greater in the kingdom than this (Mk 9:35).

Whatever is said of you at your funeral or is written on your tombstone doesn't matter. All the honors we receive from man will be quickly forgotten. The only thing that matters is what our Father says when we stand before him in judgment. All that matters is that we hear our Father say, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord."

Father, make me a servant, just like your Son!
