He Carried the Wood

Title:  He Carried the Wood

Reading for January 6:  Genesis 22-24

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.
Genesis 22:6

This scene has always been a poignant one for me when I read it. I try to identify with what emotions Abraham must be experiencing. This is his "only son" whom he loves (Gen 22:2). This is the son of promise (Gen 17:19). This is the son he dreamed about for so many years and has now watched grow up from the time he was a baby.

Now, he has a knife in his hand. He has fire in his other hand. He puts the wood on his son. Can you imagine the thoughts running through Abraham's head as he does this? He is about to sacrifice his only son as a burnt offering, and he lays the wood for the sacrifice on Isaac!

Now, think about what ran through God's mind as he saw his Son pick up the wood.

"and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha." John 19:17

Father, we cannot imagine how it grieved your heart to see your only Son bear his cross the way he did! Thank you for loving us that much.
