How a Christian Should Respond to the Supreme Court's Ruling on Homosexual Marriage
Reading for June 29th: Psalm 86-89
Weekly reading for June 28-July 4: 2 Corinthians 10-13
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
2 Corinthians 12:10
A young man last week asked me what he should do in response to arguments being made about the recent ruling from the Supreme Court on homosexual marriage. I told him that I appreciated his concern about the state of things and his desire to respond as a child of God should (and that he would ask advice from someone nearly twice his age).
My advice to him was to stay away from political discussions. Political discussions solve nothing. Politics is a fleshly weapon. We need weapons that have power to bring down spiritual strongholds.
We aren't fighting against flesh and blood (Eph 6:12). We're engaged in a spiritual conflict. We need to see that the enemy is Satan himself and that the world is under his sway (1 Jn 5:19). To save people from Satan's grasp, we can only rely on the weapons God has provided. We're playing into the Devil's hands when we fight on his terms.
Maybe you've been anxious, feeling you need to do something in response to this Supreme Court ruling. My advice to you is to just keep doing what you were doing before last week's ruling. Just keep shining your light before others. Look for those who are hurting, sick, and suffering because of sin and show kindness to them. Patiently speak the truth in love. Show them there is a better way. Plead with them to consider the Savior who died for them.
Ultimately it's the gospel, not political arguments, that will be our best weapon in this fight. Doing this may not change the course of this nation, but it is the only way we can win back precious souls that are held captive to the enemy.
Father, we are saddened by what we have done in our rebellion to the world you created. Give us grace that we might live like Jesus and tell others about him.
