He Sends Rain on the Just and the Unjust
Reading for July 15th: Proverbs 7-9
Weekly reading for July 12-18: Matthew 5-9
For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
Matthew 5:45
There are a lot of wicked people in the world who are enjoying God's blessings right now. Murders, rapists, child molesters, and drug lords are waking up to hear birds singing, smelling good food on the breakfast table, and feeling the warmth of the morning sun on their face.
And that just doesn't seem right. How can God allow such worthless people to live, let alone experience the good things of life? And what is worse, from our perspective is that according to Romans 2:4 all of these things are designed by God to lead all these to repentance! God actually wants to save them!
How can this be?
We must be cautious with this line of thinking, however. As bad as we may consider these "sinners" to be, without Christ we are in the same boat as they. We have all fallen short of God's glory because of our sin (Rom. 3:23). If we got what we truly deserved, none of us would be here (Rom. 6:23).
No, we should be thankful that God makes his sun rise on the evil, and sends rain on the unjust.
Because that's you and me.
Father, thank you for giving us the ability to rise this morning and enjoy your kindness and goodness. May we show our gratitude in the way we live before you.
