Praying for Kings
Reading for August 28th: Lamentations 1:1-3:36
Weekly reading for August 23-29: 1 Timothy 1-6
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
1 Timothy 2:1-2
Why should we pray for "kings and all who are in high positions?"
Is it for economic reasons? When we pray for our leaders are we praying, in fact, for prosperity? Is our motive materialistic?
Is it because of patriotism? Do we pray exclusively for leaders here in the United States? Are we not concerned about leaders in other countries as well?
Paul's admonition has nothing to do with a love of money or the love of country. It has everything to do with love for God and a love for the lost.
He continues, "This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:3-4)
Pray for our leaders. Pray for peace. Pray that political situations in all countries around the world may lead to the best possible environment for the gospel to be spread.
Father, we pray for leaders all around the globe that peace might abound and thus open doors for your Word.
