Let's Go Slay a Giant!
Reading for October 19th: Mark 10-11
Weekly reading for October 18-24: 1 Peter 1-5
Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you...
1 Peter 3:14-15
Of the giants we face, evangelism is one of the biggest. When met with an opportunity to share our faith, most of us are like the Israelites who, when they saw Goliath, "fled from him and were much afraid." (1 Samuel 17:24)
Why are we afraid? Do we think we'll lose our job, or someone will beat us up, or we'll be thrown in prison, or lose our life? Those things could happen but they're not likely.
What do we fear? It's pretty simple. We fear what people will think about us. They might think we're narrow minded. They might argue with us, talk about us behind our back... or, perish the thought, NOT BE OUR FRIEND ANYMORE!
Embarrassing, isn't it?
How do we change? It begins when we decide that God's honor is more important than our own; when we become more concerned with what people think about God than about what they think of us.
So, who wants to kill a giant today? Who is ready to take away the reproach from Israel? We're soldiers of Christ! Take courage! Be strong! Stand up with David and say to the adversary, "You come to me with a sword and with a spear, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."
Grant us courage, O God! Grant us wisdom! Help us to forget about self! And if we should be mocked today, then Father, glorify your name!
