Forgetting the Cross
Reading for October 25th: Luke 4-5
Weekly reading for October 25-31: 2 Peter & Jude
For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
2 Peter 1:9
I'm the worst about forgetting things. I've either lost or forgotten most everything I have, even my children (I left Josh at church one time). But of all the things I forget, what bothers me the most is when I forget what God has done for me in Christ Jesus. There is nothing worse I could ever forget than this!
Unlike some things, there are some objective ways to tell if I am forgetting this. For example, I know I'm forgetting my forgiveness in Christ...
- When I have become satisfied with my progress.
- When I stop fighting temptation.
- When I feel no remorse for sin.
- When Bible study is no longer exciting.
- When my prayers become more me-centered and less God-centered.
- When worship becomes a chore.
- When I think others are asking too much of me.
- When I feel sorry for myself.
- When I refuse forgiveness.
- When I am full of selfish thoughts.
- When I do a good deed and hope someone (other than God) is watching.
- When I feel envy in my heart.
- When I seek satisfaction in my idols.
- When I hear God's name taken in vain and it doesn't bother me.
- When God's glory is no longer my main concern.
Father, keep the cross ever before us so we'll never forget what you've done for us!
