For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
Some have argued that this is the greatest verse in the Bible. It's hard to argue otherwise:
It tells us of the greatest being. "For God so loved the world..." He is the Creator and giver and sustainer of all life. He spoke the worlds into existence and upholds everything by his power. There is none like him. He is the only God! He is the one true God of heaven!
It speaks of the greatest love. "For God so loved the world..." We had rebelled against him. We had selfishly turned, every one of us, to our own way. We had rejected the very One who made us and gave us life. He loved us anyway.
It describes the greatest gift. "...that he gave his only Son" God didn't offer an angel, a cherubim, or a seraphim to die in our place. It wouldn't have seemed right or fair even to offer another human being for the sake of those he would save. Instead he offered One who was totally innocent and completely holy. He sacrificed for rebellious, unworthy sinners like us the most precious possession he had. He gave as a sacrifice his only Son because no other sacrifice would suffice.
It promises the greatest reward. "...that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
Is it for me, dear Savior, Thy glory and Thy rest, for me so weak and sinful? O shall I be so blest? O Savior, my Redeemer, what can I but adore, and magnify and praise Thee, and love Thee ever more?
