What Are You Seeking?

Reading for November 3rd: Luke 23-24
Weekly reading for November 1-7: John 1-5

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, "What are you seeking?"
John 1:35-38

These are the first words of Jesus in the gospel of John. These words were originally directed at these two disciples of John who began to follow Jesus, but they are positioned at the beginning of John's gospel to probe and penetrate into the heart of anyone reading. (Which includes you and me!)

So, what are you seeking?

  • Do you think Jesus will make you rich or cure some disease or heal some relationship or make your life better in some way?
  • Are you simply trying to play the part of a disciple to please someone else, perhaps your parents or a girlfriend?
  • Are maybe you're a skeptic? Have you been challenged by someone to the point that you're actually going to read the gospel of John to find reasons NOT to believe in Jesus?

These two disciples responded to this question by asking a question: "Where are you staying?" They responded correctly. The reason to follow Jesus is because we want Jesus. We want to observe him and listen to him. He is the Lamb of God. He is the light of the world. He has brought us grace and truth. He has shown us the Father.

Father, purify our hearts so that as we read John's gospel we might see your glory in the life and teaching of your Son.
