Going Home
Reading for December 4th: 2 Corinthians 1-4
Weekly reading for November 29-December 5: 1 John 1-5
Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
1 John 3:2-3
When I am gone more than a week or two, I get really homesick. I find myself counting down the days and the hours till I drive or fly home.
Being overseas makes it even worse. Communication is sometimes difficult. And the fact that you couldn't just drive home at a moments notice makes the feeling of separation from Adrienne and the kids more difficult to stomach.
The night before I come home sleeping can be a challenge. I pack and repack all my bags. I check to insure my passport and other essential papers are all in place. I look at the time constantly. I count down the hours till I leave for the airport. Then I count down the hours till landing.
It's this kind of longing that John feels in this passage. We are God's children now, but communication is limited and can be difficult. We can speak to him whenever we want and we can always listen to him in the Word, but we're not satisfied with this. We want face-to-face communication. We want to see the expression on his face when we see him for the first time without the veil of separation. We want to go home!
If that doesn't motivate us to prepare ourselves, then I don't know what will.
Father, we long for the day when we'll finally get to come home!
