Why We Remember Jesus Today
Reading for December 13th: 1 Thessalonians 1-5
Weekly reading for December 13-19: Revelation 6-11
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."
Revelation 7:13-14
Why do we remember Jesus today?
Because we would be nothing without Him!
We were less than nothing before Christ. We were living out the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind and were by nature children of wrath (Eph 2:3). Our throats were open graves, our tongues deceitful, our lips full of venom, our mouths full of curses and bitterness, and our feet swift to shed blood (Rom 3:13-15). None of us were righteous, not even one (Rom 3:10). Even at our best we were still tainted by sin (Isa 64:6).
God could have nothing to do with us. His eyes were too pure (Hab 1:13). His holiness would not allow us near Him (Isa 59:2).
We were not innocent victims of our environment. We chose to sin. We chose to defy God. We demonstrated through our actions we were God's enemies (Rom 5:10).
Who could blame God for kicking us out?
But God... (and don't you love those two words!) God loved us in spite of all of this (Eph 2:4)! He showered down mercy on us when we only deserved wrath (Deut 32:21-22; Tit 3:5)! God cleansed us of all of our sin through the sacrifice of His only Son (John 3:16)! Oh praise His name!
That's why we remember Jesus today.
Father, our sins are too great for us to number, yet you have cast them to the depths of the sea! We worship You for Your boundless love! And we sing glory to the Lamb, for He is worthy of all our praise!
