This Little Light of Mine
Reading for January 26th: Exodus 25-27
"You shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive oil for the light, that a lamp may regularly be set up to burn. In the tent of meeting, outside the veil that is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening to morning before the LORD."
Exodus 27:20-21
The lampstand was located in the tabernacle in the Holy Place, opposite the table of showbread. There were no windows in the tabernacle and so it was the only source of light.
There was always light in the tabernacle. The lampstand burned all the time. Twice every day, in the morning and the evening, the high priest would attend to the wick and replenish the olive oil to keep it burning continually. Whether anyone was in the tabernacle or not, day or night, there was light in the holy place.
Surely, this was a type of the light of Jesus Christ in and among his people. We, as God's people, are the new tabernacle, not made with hands (Heb 9:11; 1 Cor 6:19). Jesus, the light of the world, shines in us and through us (Jn 1:4-5; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; Isa 11:1-2; Mt 4:16; Phil 2:15).
It is our job to make sure that this light never goes out!
Father, thank you for filling our lives with the light of your Son. Help us to shine our lights for all to see your glory!
