How God Humbles Us During Economic Uncertainty
Reading for March 20th: Judges 6-7
The LORD said to Gideon, "The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, "My own hand has saved me.'"
Judges 7:2
Sometimes we go through inexplicable difficulties in our life.
- In spite of all our efforts to plan and budget, our financial situation deteriorates.
- We do our job, giving an honest day's work for an honest day's pay, yet still lose our job.
- We work tirelessly to find work, yet can't find employment anywhere.
This economy has been a reminder to all of us that we are not in charge of our lives. It has always been God who "gives us the power to get wealth" (Deuteronomy 8:18). Our present economic uncertainty has been a rude wakeup call that many of us have needed.
We aren't in charge. Without God, we can do nothing. If it takes some "lean" years for us to learn that, then so be it.
Father, help us remember where our daily bread comes from.
