Devising Worship
Reading for April 17th: 1 Kings 12-14
He went up on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he had devised from his own heart.
1 Kings 12:33
The worship of Jeroboam was wrong for so many reasons. Among other things...
- It was in the wrong place (v 29). God had put his name in Jerusalem (11:36), not in Dan or Bethel.
- It was at the wrong time (v 32). It was close to the time for the feast of the tabernacles (15th day of the 7th month), but close is not the same as right.
- It was for the wrong reason (v 27). He was concerned about protecting himself, not the purity of God's worship.
- It was idolatry (v 28). He was repeating the sin of the people at Mt Sinai by encouraging calf worship (Exodus 32).
But all of this is summed up in verse 33 where it says that this worship was devised in his own heart. He didn't seek God's Word. He came up with this worship on his own.
Father, forgive us for the times when we are not diligently and carefully seeking your Word for instruction on how to worship you.
