The Thunderous Voice of God
Reading for June 11th: Job 35-37
"At this also my heart trembles
and leaps out of its place.
Keep listening to the thunder of his voice
and the rumbling that comes from his mouth."
Job 37:1-2
As Elihu brings his fourth and final speech to a close (ch 36-37) he praises the majesty of God in creation, particularly in the heavens. He speaks of thunder and lightning (v 1-5, 11, 15) and the whirlwind (v 9). God is about to speak in the next chapter and He speaks out of the whirlwind (38:1 - or tornado).
It's possible that Elihu spoke of God's words being like thunder because he heard the thunderstorm coming. His heart trembled at the thought of God's words coming out of his mouth.
Unfortunately, we don't have thunder clapping in the background every time we hear God's Word spoken. It might be good if we were to literally hear the thundering sound of a tornado as we read the Words of God.
The point of the book of Job is that we should fear God. God has wisdom is far above our own. We should tremble whenever we hear God speak in his Word.
Father, we come trembling before your Word! Open our ears that we might hear clearly and receive your wisdom.
