Thank God!

Reading for July 9th: Psalms 66-69

Come and hear, all you who fear God,
and I will tell what he has done for my soul.
Psalm 66:16

About a decade ago, Sierra Leone was classified as the poorest country in the world. It still today ranks as one of the poorest. More than 60 percent of it's population lives in poverty. Many live under the poverty line at less than $1.25 per day. The literacy rate is only 41 percent and 70 percent of young people are unemployed or underemployed.

But I can tell you, after visiting this poor country, that in spite of having so many difficulties the people have a strong faith in God. In fact if you ask a Sierra Leonian how they are doing, you'll usually hear this phrase in response:

"Thank God."

Humbling, to say the least.

How can we be so rich and God's blessings and not be thanking our God continually in our hearts and with our lips? Shouldn't those of us who are privileged to live in abundance outshine our poorer brethren in expressing praise?

Father, you've been so good to us and blessed us far more than we deserve. Forgive us for not thanking you more.
