Is God First in Your Heart?

Reading for July 10th: Psalms 70-73

Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
Psalm 73:25

What do you see around you right now? Are you sitting in a nice house? Are you in an office? Are you on your smart phone somewhere reading this devotion?

What if everything you see around you was gone five minutes from now? What would your life be like? Would you thank God in that situation?

That's perhaps easy to say if all we can see around us right now are material things. But maybe some of you have a spouse sitting across the kitchen table from you. You might have your children around you. What if they were suddenly taken from your life.

Could you thank God?

That's harder, isn't it?

It never ceases to amaze me to read those words of Job after he lost everything, "The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." (Job 1:21)

This verse from the Psalms is challenging to me. Can I really say this? Can I say this and really mean it? Is God the first and the only desire of my heart?

Father, thank you for all your gifts and blessings, and most important the people you have placed in our lives. But we pray we will not let these blessings overshadow our relationship with you through Jesus Christ.
