Meditations in a Political Season

Reading for July 25th: Psalms 140-145

Put not your trust in princes,
    in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
    on that very day his plans perish.
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
    who executes justice for the oppressed,
    who gives food to the hungry.
Psalm 146:3-7

There are so many things that are wrong with this country. I don't even know where to begin. Turn on the news and you're depressed. Watch just about any movie or television show out there and your heart aches. It is painful to see what has happened to us.

But though we are disappointed and concerned, we are not brought to despair.

Why?

As the psalmist says here, we do not trust in princes. What that means is we are not looking for solutions in man. All that Washington will do is let you down. There's no hope in Hollywood. Our hope is not in human beings or human institutions.

Our hope is in God. He is the Maker of this world and he knows how to save his people. He has established a kingdom in his Son, and in that kingdom we have justice for the oppressed and food for the hungry. In that kingdom we have joy, hope, and peace that passes all understanding.

We do not trust in princes. We trust in the God of all the earth.

Father, give us comfort in the knowledge that one day being released from this world that is under the sway of the wicked one and we will live in a land where we won't be discouraged or disappointed by sin anymore!
