How Rebellion Can Disguise Itself As Obedience
Reading for August 11th: Isaiah 64-66
"But this is the one to whom I will look:
he who is humble and contrite in spirit
and trembles at my word."
Isaiah 66:2
The problem with pride is it is rebellious in nature. It rebels against any kind of authority because authority is seen as an attack on self, and by its nature, pride is concerned about self above all.
Rebellion, however, is not always easy to detect. Rebellion is not just a child pitching a tantrum at Walmart or defiantly disregarding instruction or correction. Rebellion can sometimes come in more subtle forms.
Sometimes rebellion can come in disguise. It dresses up as obedience. Outwardly there is a following of the external requirements, but inwardly there is only resentment and bitterness about being told what to do or how to do it.
Is God pleased with this? Is this what he wants? No, God wants more than obedience. What he wants is our hearts.
If you've noticed a grumbling spirit within you, ask God to help you with your attitude. Our God will accept nothing less than an humble, contrite spirit that trembles at his word!
Father, give us this spirit that we might truly please you!
