The Way of Man Is Not In Himself
Reading for August 14th: Jeremiah 10-13
I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself,
that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
Jeremiah 10:23
If you've ever been in a hall of mirrors, you know it can be difficult to escape. The mirrors disorient you and the plexiglass walls are difficult to see. I remember being in one of these and feeling completely and hopelessly lost. I wished that I could look down from above so I could clearly see the pathway to freedom.
This is a good metaphor for life. From our perspective on earth, we don't know how to go. The devil is good at putting up barriers and obstacles and he uses clever tactics to disorient us. However, God is up above all of this and he guides us and leads us on the path that leads back to home.
Father, show us the way that leads to life everlasting. Help us to trust more in your guidance and less on our own faulty sense of direction.
