Being Impressed With What Impresses God
Reading for October 20th: Mark 12-13
And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!"
Mark 13:1
At the end of chapter 12 in Mark we read about the poor widow who put in her two mites. The rich put in large amounts but this woman put in a paltry amount. Jesus, however, noticed what this woman gave because she had given all she had.
It is right on the heels of that story we read of the disciples' reaction to the beauty of the temple. This reaction from the disciples serves as a contrast to Jesus. While the disciples were amazed by the massive stones and beautiful buildings (that would soon all be destroyed), Jesus was impressed by the sacrifice of a poor widow.
What is it that draws your attention? Are you impressed by the glitz and the glamor of Hollywood? Is it the wealth of the rich and famous? Maybe you're enamored with the athletic prowess of professional athletes?
Maybe if we saw others with Jesus' eyes we would not be so impressed by shallow and insignificant accomplishments. Perhaps we would see the little people who live extraordinary lives of faith and devotion to the Lord.
Father, give us eyes to see others as you see them!
