The Motivating Power of Praise
Reading for December 14th: 2 Thessalonians 1-3
We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.
2 Thessalonians 1:3
Praise is a tremendous motivator. Whether you are an elder or preacher, , a husband or wife, a mother or father, a schoolteacher or a manager, if you are in a position of influence where your opinion is valued by others, this is something you should learn to do.
So much of our time is spent in correction (and, don't get me wrong, that is something we must do). However, sometimes that is all we do.
Jesus was a master at this. He praised sinners for their faith. He gave Simon the name Peter (a rock) when he was still weak in many ways. He charged the apostles with the greatest challenge ever given, the Great Commission, right after they had all failed him at his crucifixion (and giving people responsibility is a form of praise).
Think about the last time you gave a significant person in your life sincere praise. If it's been a while, go to God and thank God for all the ways they are a blessing to yourself and others, and then go tell them that you did.
We thank you, Father, for all the people in our lives who are demonstrating faith in you and love for your saints. Help us to share our appreciation to them.
