Our Inheritance
Reading for March 10th: Joshua 18-20
The Levites have no portion among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is their heritage.
Joshua 18:7
When you think of heaven, what's the first thing that comes to mind?
My childhood fantasies of heaven were something like having endless trips to the ice cream bar or unlimited rides at Disney World. Some of the imagery from the book of Revelation may have contributed to this impression. The street of gold and the pearly gates might suggest that heaven is all about living in a beautiful place where its always sunny and 75 degrees!
But there's much more to our inheritance than that. What we receive in heaven is an eternal relationship with our Father (Rom 8:14-17; Gal 4:4-7; Col 3:1-4; Rev 22:1-5). Like everything else in this world, we would get tired of any carnal pleasure we have in this life. On the other hand, it will take an eternity to ever come close to grasping the joy and wonder over what it will be like when we at last see our Father's face!
Father, we don't want more stuff. We've got more than we need of carnal pleasures and entertainment. You are our treasure and our reward. You are all we desire. Please, send your Son soon so we might finally see you face to face!
