Reading for April 30th: 1 Chronicles 5-6
The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
1 Chronicles 6:1
The first nine chapters of 1 Chronicles gives us the genealogies from Adam down to the tribes of Israel. There is special attention paid to the tribe of Judah (ch 4), the descendants of David (ch 3) and to David's genealogy (ch 2). This is because the books of 1 & 2 Chronicles focus on the southern kingdom of Judah and the Davidic line of kings.
The other tribe that receives considerable attention is the tribe of Levi (ch 6). The reason for this is that the kings were judged to be good or bad kings based on how they treated the house of the LORD (the "house of the LORD" is referenced over 200 times in 1 & 2 Chronicles). If a king was faithful to the worship of Jehovah he was judged to be good. If a king forsook the LORD and neglected His house to serve idols he was judged as evil.
There's a lesson here for us about our priorities. We are a kingdom of priests today in the church (Rev 1:6). We will not be evaluated by how many homeruns we hit, what our GPA was in school, how high we climb the corporate ladder, or how many things we can acquire in this life. We'll be judged by how we treat the house of God.
Father, rid our hearts of every idol that we might truly worship you and sanctify you as first in our lives.
