He Revives the Spirit of the Lowly
Reading for July 31st: Isaiah 57-59
For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,
who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly,
and to revive the heart of the contrite."
Isaiah 57:15
Do you remember back when we used to know phone numbers? I used to brag that I knew the number of every single member where I started out preaching. (It was a small church.) Now, we have speed dial, or the list of our favorites on our phones.
Who is at the top of your speed dial? Whoever it is, I can guess that this person is someone who understands you. They know you better than anyone else. You know that you could call them at just about any time and they're willing to listen to you for as long as you need. And you know that you can talk to them about just about anything because they genuinely care about you and will want to know what is going on in your life.
Did I get that right? Does that describe the top person on your speed dial?
Do you realize that I just described God? That's right. He is the Creator of heaven and earth. He is holy, holy, holy. He has no beginning or end. He is transcendent in all his ways. We cannot even conceive of his eternal power and infinite knowledge. He dwells in unapproachable light which no man has seen or can see.
And he listens to my prayers.
Does that not blow your mind?
Father, what an amazing thought this is that you would condescend to listen to frail mortals like us! Thank you for hearing us when we come to you in prayer!
