Accepting the Consequences of Sin
Reading for August 23rd: Lamentations 3-5
Why should a living man complain,
a man, about the punishment of his sins?
Let us test and examine our ways,
and return to the LORD!
Lamentations 3:40
One of the signs of spiritual maturity is when one has the willingness to accept the consequences of sin. After David sinned with Bathsheba, he prayed, "Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words, and blameless in your judgment." (Psa 51:4)
The consequences of David's sin were severe. The sword never departed from his house. Yet, he didn't complain. He sinned. He deserved to be punished. He accepted God's judgment against him as just.
When we accept the consequences of our sins, we show to God that we accept our responsibility. We accept the gravity and seriousness of our actions.
Father, humble us and help us to own up to whatever consequences have come because of our rebellion against you.
