What Would Jesus Say In the Current Political Climate?
Reading for October 26th: Luke 13-15
There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
Luke 13:1-3
What would Jesus have to say in the current political situation in which we live? If we were to tell him about atrocities in war-torn countries, or injustices committed in this nation by those in high office, what do you think Jesus would say in response?
We might be surprised at how little he would say. It's not because Jesus doesn't care about those things, but because they have little to do with helping us grow spiritually. He was more concerned about encouraging personal godliness rather than engaging in political debate.
We need to be reminded of Jesus' priorities (especially now that we have social media). His kingdom was not of this world (John 18:36). He viewed this world as being under the control of the devil (Jn 12:31). He saw the gospel as the means of bringing out of the world, one by one, those who had humble hearts who would receive his message (Lk 10:21-22). We add to the kingdom by winning hearts and minds for Christ, not by winning political debates. Let us follow the example of our Lord and focus our talk on the gospel.
Our Lord and King, help us keep your eternal kingdom first in our hearts and minds!
