Wise Men Seek Him
Reading for January 2: Genesis 5-8
Weekly reading for January 1-7: Matthew 1-4
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?
Matthew 2:1-2
Have you ever wondered why those wise men from the east came looking for a Jewish king?
We don't know because Matthew doesn't tell us. But is it possible that they had read this passage from the book of Daniel:
"And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever..." (Daniel 2:44)
Or perhaps this passage:
“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed."
(Daniel 7:13-14)
The fact is there is no telling how God motivated those men from the east to travel hundreds of miles from home seeking this Jewish king. But one thing we know is that God is still moving wise men to seek him.
What about you?
Father God, thank you for giving us strong evidence that Jesus is our King! Accept our worship as we bow down and worship at his feet!
