Title: Enough But Not Too Much
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Romans 1:21
Some skeptics say they would believe if God would show them overwhelming evidence for his existence. Certainly God would be able to provide us with this kind of proof, so why does he not?
Philip Yancey explains in his book The Jesus I Never Knew that God has not overwhelmed us with proof because that would not accomplish his eternal purpose. Yancey explains:
"God's terrible insistence on human freedom is so absolute that he granted us the power to live as though he did not exist, to spit in his face, to crucify him. I believe God insists on such restraint because no pyrotechnic displays of omnipotence will achieve the response he desires. Although power can force obedience, only love can summon a response of love, which is the one thing God wants from us and the reason he created us."
God enters our heart only when invited. "I stand at the door and knock," Jesus said (Revelation 3:20). He has given us plenty of evidence to believe in him. If we will be open and honest in our investigation, there is more than enough reason to believe.
Thank you for revealing yourself to us, O God. Increase our faith.
