Title: Is It OK to be Rude to Telemarketers?
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21
I can't stand telemarketers. We're on the "no call" list but we still get plenty of solicitations. They seem to always call at the most inconvenient time, and the ones who are well trained can be extremely difficult to get off the phone with you.
Another thing I dread is having to get help from "customer service" (or as Clark Howard puts it, "customer no-service"). I was on hold over a half an hour last night after going through the automated phone tree (when all I wanted was to talk to a real person).
I've wondered what it must be like to be on the other end of the line. I had a good friend who had to work at a call center and she told me it was one of the most difficult jobs she ever had. She was as sweet as she could be, but it didn't stop people from venting all their pent up frustration toward telemarketers on her.
I wonder if sometimes the person from "customer service" isn't made less courteous because of the way they are treated by us all day long. I doubt they get much love or appreciation at their job the way some of us do.
So I'm resolving to be as courteous as I can be on all of these annoying phone calls. I have every right to expect the person on the other end to do their job and give me the service I'm paying for, but I can still do that and remember that I'm a Christian.
Father help us to not be overcome by evil (rudeness, indifference, etc), but help us to overcome evil with good.
