Our Hope
Reading for March 4: Deuteronomy 33-34
Weekly reading for March 4-10: Ephesians 1-6
Title: Our Hope
In him you also... were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14
What is our hope?
To some, heaven is a place up in the sky where we'll float around and play harps. Others have a more biblical picture of a city with a golden street and pearly gates (Revelation 21-22).
But when Paul thought of his hope he thought of God. "Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 4:17)
Consider our text. As much as any other passage, this one should define what our hope is. What is the Spirit called here? He is called a guarantee or an earnest payment. Think about it, if the downpayment of our inheritance is God's Spirit, then what should the full payment be?
God himself.
And we could hope for nothing better.
Father, may the eyes of our hearts be enlightened, that we may know what is the hope to which you have called us.
