Whose Wisdom Is Shared in YOUR Pulpit?

Title:  Whose Wisdom Is Shared in YOUR Pulpit?

Reading for March 14:  Judges 4-5
Weekly reading for March 11-17:  Colossians 1-4; Philemon

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:8

If you are looking for the heart of Colossians, I believe it is here. Paul was intensely concerned about the allure of human wisdom and philosophy. He wanted all of us to understand that Christ is all we need. All true wisdom is found in him.

If this were a devotion written primarily to preachers, at this point I would emphasize the importance of remaining in the Word and grounding our teaching in Christ. But most of you are not preachers. I want you to think about what this verse says to you. Though you may never stand in a pulpit, you have a pulpit. Wherever you have influence, that is your pulpit. What do you teach those in your circle of influence?

  • When your son or daughter comes to you with problems, do you impart Christ's wisdom or worldly wisdom?
  • When difficult issues arise in your marriage, do you go to Christ for the answers? How do you settle disagreements? What is your default? Is it pragmatism? Is it human philosophy and reasoning? Do you reference Christ?
  • What about at work or at school or in the community? When people come to you is it because they know you are that person they can always turn to with an answer from Christ?

Father fill us with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in your knowledge.
