What Happens When We Underestimate Kids
Title: What Happens When We Underestimate Kids
Reading for March 29: 1 Samuel 22-24
Weekly reading for March 25-31: Luke 1-4
And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
Luke 2:48-49
Adults underestimate children. The assumption behind most youth ministries in churches is that the ministries must be tied to entertainment in some way. Slip the Bible in measured amounts... too much of it will only drive kids away. The unspoken admission is that kids are not all that interested in spiritual things.
Jesus disproves this theory. The adults in this story were shocked. The adults may have assumed Jesus would be on the playground. The temple was the last place the adults figured a child would be.
The adults were wrong.
And so are we when we assume children cannot tolerate too much Bible. Our kids get enough worldly distractions as it is. They don't need less Bible in their lives. They need more.
But perhaps the problem is not with our children. Perhaps the problem is that adults have lost the desire for the pure milk of the word. We've forgotten (or have never experienced) the true joy of learning God's will.
Father, thank you for our young people. Help us to secure their hearts with your word!
