What My Kids See In Me
Title: What My Kids See In Me
Reading for April 5: 2 Samuel 15-16
Weekly reading for April 1-7: Luke 5-9
He also told them a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher."
Luke 6:39-40
Jesus is warning us here about the kind of teachers we choose. I would like to flip the application around. Jesus seems to be speaking of those who would be considered "disciples" or those who would be "fully trained" by us? Who would that be for you and me?
The first ones who come to my mind are my children. How am I doing as a parent? Though it's not impossible, it is hard for children to rise above the example of their parents. With that it mind, here are some things I should consider:
How is my prayer life? Do my children see me praying? When a crisis arises, is prayer my first instinct? Do my children look up at me as an example of one who depends on God?
What about my Bible study habits? Do my children know that I read God's word? Does the Bible sit on the shelf from Sunday to Sunday collecting dust?
What about my obedience to God? Do I practice what I preach? Kids are pretty good at spotting hypocrisy. What do they see in me?
Father, we are aware of the fact that our children are watching us. Help us to be the kind of disciples we want our children to become.
