The Look Peter Would Never Forget
Title: The Look Peter Would Never Forget
Reading for April 24: 2 Kings 17-18
Weekly reading for April 15-21: Luke 20-24
And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, "Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean." But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.
Luke 22:59-61
We've all had one of those moments. We acted selfishly and callously. We thought we could get away with it. But we didn't. Not only did they find out what we did, but they caught us while we were doing it. And we get the look. Not a look of anger. (It would be easier to deal with that.) Worse than anger, we get a look of hurt and disappointment.
Can you think of a time like this that you hurt deeply someone that you love dearly? Maybe it was your spouse or a parent or a friend who is especially close to you. Peter did this to the best friend he ever had, the friend to whom he pledged his undying loyalty. And Peter got that look of disappointment after he betrayed his Master and Lord.
There are several mental exercises we can use to help maintain integrity and faith when under fire. Perhaps more than anything else, getting in our mind a visual picture of Jesus watching us would help us to remain faithful when we're tempted by sin.
More than anything else, Father, we don't want to disappoint you. Help us to live so that we might not grieve your Spirit, but to put a smile on your face.
