Who Is Jesus?
Title: Who Is Jesus?
Reading for August 12: Jeremiah 25-27
Weekly reading for August 12-18: Matthew 15-19
What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.
Matthew 18:12-13
As we prepare ourselves to worship today, I want to help us begin by pondering a simple question in our hearts: Who is Jesus?
He is the Almighty (Genesis 17:1), the Creator (1 Peter 4:19), the Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 49:7).
He is the Lord of all (Acts 10:36), the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8), the Lord of hosts (Haggai 1:5), the Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15), the Lord our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6).
He is the Alpha and the Omega (Revelation 22:13), the Cornerstone, God over all (Romans 9:5), the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:19), the Eternal God (Deuteronomy 33:27), the I AM (Exodus 3:14), the Author of Life (Acts 3:15).
He is a Consuming Fire (Hebrews 12:29).
He has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand and marked the heavens with a span (Isaiah 40:12). He rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will (Daniel 4:25).
When he roars the pastures mourn and the tops of mountains wither (Amos 1:2). When he treads on the high places of the earth the mountains melt under him and the valleys split open like wax before the fire (Micah 1:3-4).
His judgments are unsearchable and his ways are inscrutable (Romans 11:33). His thoughts and ways are high above us, higher than the heavens above the earth (Isaiah 55:8-9).
He is transcendent. He inhabits eternity. His name is Holy (Isaiah 57:15).
He is all of this more. What's perhaps most amazing about our Lord is that cares about us, and he does so individually. He loves me. He listens to me when I pray to him. He is intensely interested in my problems. He knows me and cared enough to leave heaven to come to earth as a man and suffer. Yes, He even went to the cross and died for me (Galatians 2:20).
Holy, holy, holy Lord Jesus, we don't know why you love us, but we're so thankful you do!
