Sound Doctrine
Title: Sound Doctrine
Reading for September 19: Amos 1-4
Weekly reading for September 16-22: 2 Timothy & Titus
But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.
Titus 2:1
The word translated "sound" in this verse is a word which literally means "healthy." For teaching to be healthy, it must have at least two characteristics:
1. It must be true (1 Timothy 6:3; 2 Timothy 1:13; 4:3; Titus 1:9). There are "experts" in the Bible out there who offer answers that are not grounded in truth. They often care only about what can make them the most money or win them the most popularity. They tell you what they think you want to hear.
Question: Where do you turn to for truth? There's only one source that is completely reliable: the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
2. It must be practical (1 Timothy 1:10). Paul warns against useless controversies that promote speculation (1 Timothy 6:3-5). The law, he argues in 1 Timothy 1:10, is meant for practical use; that is, it is to help us deal with real problems in our lives.
Question: What is the focus of your study? Is it to help you understand sin and overcome temptation? Is it to increase your level of discernment and guide your daily walk? Is it to grow to become more like Christ?
Father, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Help me to seek answers from your word and to always seek practical application.
