So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:6
Ever fallen asleep at the wheel? The scary thing about doing this is it normally happens when we are driving really fast. You don't normally fall asleep when driving 45 mph around town. Your brain is more engaged at that speed because you're having to turn, stop and start, etc.
We tend to fall asleep when we're on a nice open highway. We've usually driven for miles and miles on cruise control (mentally as well as mechanically). This is dangerous because we can easily run off the road or something can run out in front of us, and we have little time to react when we finally wake up. (And a car traveling 70 miles an hour travels over 100 feet per second!)
Things can happen just as fast on our spiritual path, too. Everything can be running smoothly and then suddenly we can find ourselves drifting off the straight and narrow way. We must keep our eyes open and fixed on our destination. Let us not get lulled to sleep by a false sense of security. We must be watchful at all times!
Father, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
