The One Who Has No Beginning

Title:  The One Who Has No Beginning

Reading for January 1:  Genesis 1-4

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1

Everything has a beginning.

We can all point to the day when our life began. My life outside the womb began on October 7, 1971. My life in the womb began about 9 months before that day. It was on that day (whenever that was) that my life began. The day before that day (whenever that was) I did not exist.

Think about this fact for a moment. There was a day when you came to be a living being. Before that day you did not exist. In fact, there was an hour, a minute, and a second when you came to be a living thing. Think about it, before that hour, minute, and second you did not exist.

And so it is with every living thing. Every plant, bird, fish, animal, bacteria... Every living thing has a beginning. In fact, every non-living thing has a beginning. Every rock, mineral, planet, star, galaxy... Every non-living thing has a beginning.

There is only One who has no beginning. There is only One who cannot point to the day when he began. There is only One who cannot point to the hour, the minute, and the second when he came into existence.

His name is God. In the beginning there was God. At the beginning of all things that were made, both living and non-living, there was the One who made it all.

Meditate on that fact for a moment...

And now join me as we go to him in prayer...

Great God and Father, you are the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. You are the One who is and who was and who is to come. You laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain. They will all wear out like a garment, but you are the same. Your years will have no end. Hear our prayer this morning and accept our sacrifice of praise.
