Do You Appreciate the Cross?
Title: Do You Appreciate the Cross?
Reading for January 25: Exodus 31-34
So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Alas, this people has sinned a great sin... But now, if you will forgive their sin-but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written."
Exodus 32:31-32
Do you appreciate the cross?
I wonder sometimes if we've even got a clue. We strain to find analogies to help us comprehend it, but none of them come close. It's not just about a good man dying for those he loves. It's not merely a heroic act of sacrifice. It is all of that, but so much more.
To get the magnitude of the cross, we have to come face to face with our shame. We weren't just bad. We were utterly wicked and sinful. We weren't just weak. We were stubborn and rebellious. We wanted our idols. We fashioned and built them. We worshiped and cherished them.
And we did it right at the foot of the mountain of God. We did it in his face.
"For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person-though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die-but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:6-8
Father, we are ashamed of our indifference, even our rebellion against you. We repent in dust and ashes. May your love fill our souls so that the love of sinning might be removed from our hearts.
