The Central Place of Giving Thanks
Title: The Central Place of Giving Thanks
Reading for June 28: Psalms 134-140
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Psalm 136:1
It is not possible to thank God too much. Twenty six times in Psalm 136 the phrase is repeated "for his steadfast love endures forever." Gratitude is a cardinal virtue in the life of a child of God.
Even people in the world understand the importance of gratitude. Most children are taught the importance of saying "thank you." Ingratitude is a sin that even those who have rejected God can easily recognize as bad and harmful to our character.
How much more must those of us who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb understand the importance of this grace. We, who have been bought and sanctified by God's wondrous gift, should be thanking God every day and throughout each day.
To fail to be thankful is the epitome of selfishness. It takes a selfish person indeed to look at the cross and think, "I deserve that." But that's exactly what we are doing when we fail to thank God. We cheapen his grace.
So may we all day be singing in our hearts and with our mouths, "O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be!"
God of mercy and grace, we cannot put into words the gratitude of our hearts. Thank you for your indescribable gift!
